This happens when the QB POS processes crash in the background or stop responding to the software commands. It is possible that the user.config file inside the shell folder gets damaged and turns into an unsupported format. You need to recreate the file using the steps given below-

  1. Press the Ctrl+Shift+Esckeys to launch the task manager.

  2. Hover over the Processes tab and highlight the QBPOS shell process with a single click.

  3. Tap the End Task option at the bottom of the tab.

After the QB POS tasks stop running in the background, open the file explorer and go to the C:\Users\ (Current User Name)\AppData\Local\Intuit\QuickBooksPOS. Use the steps below-

  1. Tap the View option on the top and select the Hidden Items checkbox.

  2. Use the Date Modified filter to sort the files according to their creation date and go inside the QBPOSshell.exe folder.

  3. Right-click the user.config file and tap Rename.

  4. Add ‘old’ at the end of the file name and save it.

  5. Try opening QuickBooks Point of Sale.

Solution 2- Sign in with the Windows Administrator account

QuickBooks POS also fails to start if it cannot connect with files on the system drives or use the system resources. You can fix the issue by using your Windows Admin account as shown in these steps-

  1. Go to the Windows Start menu and click the user icon in the settings.

  2. Click Sign out to go to the login screen ofWindows.

  3. Select the Admin account if it is mentioned, or type yourWindows account credentials.

  4. Rerun QuickBooks Point of Sale after your sign in with the Windows Admin account.
